In summer 2024, CS3 researchers Dr. Brian Smith (Columbia University Department of Computer Science) and Dr. Gil Zussman (Electrical Engineering Department) are mentoring four students:

  • Verrels Lukman Eugeneo, Pomona College
  • Joyce Gill, Grinnell College
  • Andrea P. Sepúlveda-Vargas, University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez
  • Liao Zhu, University of Iowa

The SURE Program introduces students with a demonstrated commitment to advancing equity in STEM to the experience of hands-on research in their fields of interest. At CS3, the program is part of our Engineering Workforce Development initiatives that broaden participation among the next generation of smart city researchers and innovators.

Eugeneo, Gill, and Sepúlveda-Vargas are with Dr. Smith, and Zhu is with Dr. Zussman.

Our students in Dr. Smith’s lab recently took a field trip around Harlem, where CS3 is based. They enjoyed soul food at Sylvia’s and some relaxation at 9 Tails Coffee Shop.

We are proud of the work our SURE undergraduate students have already accomplished and look forward to the remaining weeks of the program.
