Maxine Gillies
In 2002, I embarked on a transformative journey, migrating to the United States with hope but little understanding of how to navigate employment in a new country. My path led me to STRIVE, a pivotal step that provided me with workplace skills, confidence, resilience, and the adaptability to thrive in the vibrant melting pot of New York City.
My first opportunity came in the form of a temporary clerical position. Recognizing my potential, STRIVE’s team quickly offered me a full-time role as a front-line worker in reception. In this position, I became the welcoming face of the organization, developing a deep connection with the students and alumni we served. This role not only enhanced my understanding of the community but also ignited a passion for service and engagement.
I quickly advanced into roles of greater responsibility, driven by my dedication and commitment to growth. My tenure at STRIVE became a period of continuous development, culminating in my position managing the Outreach and Admissions team. Alongside professional growth, I pursued educational advancement, earning my GED when I first joined STRIVE and later receiving a full scholarship to complete my Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts with a minor in Social Science.
STRIVE provided more than a career—it gave me a purpose and a platform to inspire others. Today, as Community Recruitment and Engagement Manager, I draw on my lived experience, education, and professional expertise to build connections, empower individuals, and foster opportunities for others to achieve their goals.
I am deeply excited about what the future holds and remain committed to creating pathways to success for the communities I serve. My journey exemplifies the transformative power of opportunity and the ripple effect it can have on individuals and communities alike.
